Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma disclosed in the Assam Assembly about his government’s action in detecting illegal infiltrators in the State where so far more than 1.59 lakh individuals have been identified as ‘foreigners’. Additionally, he stated another 96,000 individuals have been categorized as Doubtful (D) voters.
Dr Himanta Sarma, who holds the home portfolio as well, informed legislators about 100 functional Foreigners’ Tribunals or FTs tasked with adjudicating the citizenship status of D-voters. Responding to a query from Opposition AIUDF legislator Aminul Islam, the CM revealed that as of December 31, 2023, these tribunals had rendered judgments on 1,59,353 individuals, deeming them foreigners.
Furthermore, the FTs have resolved a total of 3,37,186 cases by the end of last year, with 96,149 cases remaining pending before various tribunals.
In response to a query from Congress MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed, CM Himanta provided details on the status of D-voters in the State, indicating that there are presently 96,987 such individuals. Of these, 41,275 D-voters are yet to receive FT notices, as the notification process follows strict procedures and may require additional time to complete.
Beyond the legislative session, Dr Himanta met with Governor Gulab Chand Kataria to discuss various developmental issues concerning the State. Describing the meeting as routine, an official release highlighted discussions on government initiatives aimed at advancing infrastructure and economic growth in Assam.
