The Assam Government officially declared Kaji Nemu, commonly known as citrus lemon in English, as the State fruit, citing its distinctive aroma, health benefits, and Geographical Indication or GI tag.
Announcing the decision in the State Assembly following approval from the Cabinet, Agriculture Minister Atul Bora commended the government’s move.
Highlighting the fruit’s commercial cultivation and export potential, Bora noted that Kaji Nemu received its GI tag in 2016 and has been cultivated on a significant scale in the State, with exports to numerous nations including the Middle East.
“Commercial plantation of the Kaji Nemu is being done. There is 15.90 hectares of land under its cultivation, with production at 1.58 metric tonnes. In the last two years, this fruit has been exported to several countries, including to the Middle East,” he explained.
Bora underscored the unique qualities of Kaji Nemu which enhance immunity and adds a distinctive flavour to food.
Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma hailed the decision, stating that it would elevate Kaji Nemu to global prominence.
“Our government has decided to declare Kaji Nemu (Citrus Limon) as the State Fruit of Assam. With its unique aroma & antioxidant properties, Assam lemon has enriched our local cuisines,” CM Himanta shared on social media.
The designation is expected to enhance the fruit’s visibility on the global stage, promoting self-dependency and bolstering production, added the CM.
