Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma alleged Rahul Gandhi, during his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra or BJNY, threatened Congress MLAs in Assam to disrupt the functioning of the Assembly. He claimed Gandhi summoned Congress legislators to his bus and coerced them to either “tear into” the Chief Minister or face suspension from the party for duration of five to 15 years.
Addressing the media, CM Himanta recounted the incident, stating, “Listen to a story – When Rahul Gandhi came to Assam, he called all the Congress MLAs in his luxurious bus and threatened them that the Assam Assembly should not be allowed to function.”
Despite these allegations, Dr HImanta maintained that the Assembly operated smoothly with the support of Congress lawmakers, hinting at a shift in their allegiance towards the government.
In a taunting gesture towards the Congress, the Assam CM referred to their response as a “gift,” accentuating that Congress MLAs are now backing the government and enabling peaceful proceedings in the House.
This revelation comes amidst a challenging situation for the Congress in Assam, with senior members pledging support to the BJP-led Government.
Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika confirmed that four Congress MLAs have backed the Himanta Biswa Sarma Government, hinting at further defections in the future.
He mentioned in a social media post, “Shashikant Das, Siddiquie Ahmed, Kamalakhya Purkyashta and Basanta Das, are the four Congress MLAs who have supported the Government led by Himanta Biswa Sarma.”
The tensions between Rahul Gandhi and Himanta Biswa Sarma have escalated recently, with Gandhi accusing Himanta Sarma of corruption and the Assam CM retaliating by threatening legal action against the Congress leader. The exchange of verbal attacks intensified during Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Assam.
Rahul Gandhi expressed he is fine with individuals like Himanta Biswa Sarma and Milind Deora to leave the Congress, citing diverging political ideologies.
