Putting a curtain to speculation surrounding India’s T20 World Cup captaincy, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah declared Rohit Sharma will lead the team in the upcoming tournament in West Indies.
Speaking at an event in Rajkot, Shah emphasised Rohit’s leadership prowess, stating, “Under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, hum Bharat ka jhanda gaadenge (we will hoist the Indian flag) in 2024 T20 World Cup in Barbados.”
Shah pointed out Rohit’s remarkable performance during the Afghanistan series, where he led the team from a challenging position to a formidable total, highlighting his ability to steer the team under pressure.
Addressing concerns about Hardik Pandya’s absence due to injury, Shah reiterated Rohit’s suitability for the captaincy role, citing his prior experience and success in leading the team during the ODI World Cup.
Rohit’s return to the T20I fold after the 2022 T20 World Cup debacle confirms his leadership role, with Pandya previously stepping in as captain during Rohit’s absence. Pandya, currently undergoing rehabilitation for an ankle injury, is aiming to regain fitness ahead of the Indian Premier League, where he will captain the Mumbai Indians.
With India set to face Pakistan, Ireland, Canada, and co-hosts USA in the group stages of the 2024 T20 World Cup, Rohit Sharma’s leadership will be instrumental in guiding the team towards success in the tournament.
