As Basant Panchami heralds the arrival of spring in February, Delhi becomes a canvas for artistic expression and it comes alive with events like Surajkund Mela (February 2-18), Aadi Mahotsav (February 10-18) and Vividhta Ka Amrit Mahotsav (February 2-March 31). These cultural events display vibrant mosaic of Bharat’s art and culture and enchanting diversity of Northeastern States respectively.
Nestled amidst the serene Aravalli Hills, the annual Surajkund International Handicrafts Mela paints a picture of community collaboration and cultural synergy. Organised by the Surajkund Mela Authority and Haryana Tourism, in collaboration with several Union Ministries, this festival embodies the spirit of sustainable development goals, fostering livelihoods for artisans while enchanting visitors with its kaleidoscope of traditions.
Underneath the shade of majestic Kikar trees, the mela unfolds like a dreamscape, adorned with lanterns, paper chimes, and vibrant puppets that dance against the azure sky. From rural wall paintings to colourful murals and traditional crafts, every corner teems with the vibrancy of Indian heritage.
This year, Gujarat takes centre stage, with its lively Khushboo Gujarat Ki theme beckoning visitors to explore its cultural treasures. Meanwhile, the Northeastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation adds its unique flair as the official cultural partner of the event.
At every turn, the mela offers a feast for the senses, with Phulkari crafts from Punjab, intricate jutis from Delhi and Rajasthan, and exquisite handlooms from across the country enticing visitors with their charm. Amidst the bustling chaupals, folk performances and traditional dances unfold, adding to the tapestry of cultural delights.
For gastronomes, the mela presents a tantalizing array of indigenous cuisines, from dal bafla to pyaaz ki kachori, inviting visitors to embark on a culinary journey through Bharat’s diverse flavours.
As dusk descends and the hills echo with the laughter of revellers, the Surajkund Mela continues to weave its magic, uniting people in a celebration of Bharat’s timeless heritage and artistic ingenuity.
