Amid escalating tensions in West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali region, the Enforcement Directorate or ED has launched a probe into Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan for alleged money laundering. Raids are currently underway at Shahjahan’s residence and six other locations as authorities intensify their crackdown.
The controversy surrounding Shahjahan deepens as women in Sandeshkhali accuse him of involvement in land-grabbing and sexual assault, allegedly using coercive tactics. His evasion of law enforcement since a mob, purportedly linked to him, attacked ED officials during a ration scam search operation on January 5, has raised concerns about his influence and power in the area.
While Shahjahan remains at large, his aides, Shibu Hazra and Uttam Sardar, have been apprehended by the State police. With 17 arrests so far, law enforcement urges villagers to voice their grievances, holding camps to address issues related to land grab and extortion.
The BJP accuses the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress of shielding Shahjahan, further fuelling political tensions amidst the ongoing turmoil.
