External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has highlighted the complex aspects of Bharat-China relations, stressing upon the challenge of maintaining equilibrium amidst shifting geopolitical landscapes. Speaking at the Raisina Dialogue, he underscored the need to navigate China’s strategic manoeuvres while asserting Bharat’s right to leverage international factors for a favourable outcome.
Addressing the recent border tensions in eastern Ladakh, Jaishankar pointed out China’s departure from established norms, posing a significant hurdle in bilateral ties. He accentuated the importance of recalibrating and sustaining equilibrium, acknowledging the intricate nature of this effort.
Jaishankar cautioned against falling into the trap of viewing Bharat-China relations in isolation, emphasizing the influence of external factors. He warned against the “mind games” employed by China to narrow down discussions to bilateral issues, urging Bharat to assert its interests on a global platform.
The minister stressed Bharat’s economic potential, highlighting projections that both countries could emerge as $50 trillion-plus economies by 2075. While acknowledging China’s head start in economic growth, he focussed upon Bharat’s upward trajectory and the eventual convergence of their economies.
Predicitng about the Chinese economy’s future the Indian leader said it “will be flattening out and Bharat will be growing” referring to projections by Goldman Sachs. He added Bharat should exude confidence to “leverage” the global system to create the “best possible outcome”.
Jaishankar outlined the need for Bharat to chart its own course and not succumb to external pressures, particularly from competitive nations. He called for strategic autonomy in policy decisions, rejecting any undue influence on Bharat’s foreign policy choices.
Reflecting on the future trajectory of Bharat-China relations, Jaishankar acknowledged the inevitability of occasional tensions as both countries seek to assert their interests.
