Iconic ghazal and playback singer Pankaj Udhas breathed his last following a prolonged illness at the age of 72, confirmed the Udhas family on Monday.
In a heartfelt statement shared on Instagram, Pankaj Udhas’ daughter Nayaab announced, “With a heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on February 26 due to a prolonged illness.”
The news of his demise prompted an outpouring of condolences from fans, who flooded the comment section with messages expressing their grief and extending their sympathies to the family.
Pankaj Udhas passed away around 11 am at Breach Candy Hospital, according to a family source. His last rites are scheduled to take place on Tuesday. He is survived by his wife, Farida Udhas, daughters Nayaab and Reva Udhas, and brothers Nirmal and Manhar Udhas, who are also notable singers.
Pankaj Udhas will be remembered for his unforgettable contributions to the music industry, including iconic tracks like Chitthi Aayi Hai from Mahesh Bhatt’s 1986 film Naam, Chandi Jaisa Rang Hai from Pravin Bhatt’s 1998 movie Ek Hi Maqsad, Aaj Phir Tumpe from Feroz Khan’s 1988 film Dayavan, Jeeye To Jeeye Kaise from Lawrence D’Souza’s 1991 movie Saajan, and Chhupana Bhi Nahi Aata from Abbas-Mustan’s 1993 film Baazigar, among many others.
His prominent works included albums like Aahat (1980) and included timeless ghazals such as Na Kajre Ki Dhaar, Aur Ahista Kijiye Baatein, Ek Taraf Uska Ghar, and Thodi Thodi Piya Karo.
Reflecting on his return to the stage after the pandemic-induced hiatus, Pankaj Udhas shared his emotional journey, expressing gratitude for the overwhelming support of his audience.
