In the latest projections, former US President Donald Trump has emerged victorious over Nikki Haley, his final challenger in the 2024 Republican Presidential race, clinching the party’s primary in Michigan.
Simultaneously, President Joe Biden has secured a comfortable victory in the Democratic primary in Michigan, defeating Minnesota Representative Dean Phillips.
This victory marks Trump’s latest victory following his sweeping success in all previous 2024 Republican primary contests across five States: Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, the US Virgin Islands, and South Carolina.
His recent win in South Carolina dealt a blow to Indian-American Haley, who hails from the State, on February 24.
Media projections indicate that Haley, a former US Ambassador to the UN, secured a distant second place in Michigan with approximately 28 per cent, while Trump maintained a commanding lead with over 66 per cent.
Trump’s consistent winning streak strengthens his position in the race for the Republican nomination for the November Presidential election.
The Michigan primary occurred just days before the pivotal ‘Super Tuesday’ on March 5, where Republican voters in 15 States and one US territory will cast their ballots.
Despite facing four criminal indictments, including charges related to conspiracy and election tampering in the 2020 Presidential election, Trump’s legal battles loom as his first trial is set to commence in New York City on March 25.
Meanwhile, in the Democratic primary, Representative Dean Phillips stands as one of President Biden’s notable opponents.
Projections show Biden commanding nearly 80 per cent of the vote in Michigan, while Phillips trails far behind at a mere 2 per cent.
Michigan holds significance as a key swing state that will be hotly contested by candidates from both parties in the November election. Trump’s victory in 2016 contributed significantly to his overall presidential win that year, while Biden secured the State in 2020.
