Assam Congress suffered another blow as its senior leader and party committee president Rana Goswami tendered his resignation as per insiders on Wednesday.
“I beg to state that I am tendering my resignation as the working president of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee and as an active member of Indian National Congress,” Goswami conveyed in a letter addressed to Congress organisation general secretary KC Venugopal.
Goswami stepped down from his position as the organisational in-charge of Upper Assam, citing “various political reasons” on Sunday.
Speculations are rife the former MLA will either join the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-BJP or its ally Asom Gana Parishad. Ahead of this decision, he held a meeting with his supporters in his hometown of Jorhat late on Saturday.
This development transpired just two weeks after another Congress working president, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha (an MLA from North Karimganj), along with Mangaldai legislator Basanta Kumar Das, resigned from the party and pledged support to the State Government.
Goswami is likely to meet with the BJP’s central leadership and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is currently in New Delhi to discuss party candidates for the coming Lok Sabha polls, said officials.
A day earlier, CM Himanta had expressed his willingness to welcome Jorhat’s “strong leader Goswami” if he takes any such decision.
Goswami served as a Congress candidate in the State Assembly from Jorhat in both 2006 and 2011. There is assumption that he may emerge as the BJP nominee for the Titabar seat (located in the Jorhat district) in the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections.
