As the Lok Sabha poll is approaching, all political parties in Assam are actively involved in hammering out strategies. Subsequently, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and State BJP chief Bhabesh Kalita wrapped up a significant meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP president JP Nadda and party’s Assam observer Baijayant Panda in New Delhi on February 28.
Both leaders from Assam initially convened with Panda before meeting Nadda and Shah. The discussions primarily revolved around the candidate survey report concerning the Lok Sabha constituencies within the State.
According to Bhabesh Kalita, “We conducted surveys across 12 constituencies, reserving one each for the AGP and the UPPL. However, the allocation of seats among the allies is yet to be confirmed. Additionally, we have prioritised the inclusion of women candidates.”
It’s noteworthy that the BJP hasn’t conducted surveys for the Kokrajhar and Barpeta Lok Sabha constituencies.
The final list of candidates will be deliberated upon and prepared in the Central Election Committee or CEC meeting scheduled for today at 9 pm. Ahead of the elections, a three-member panel for each constituency has been meticulously drafted to ensure the BJP’s strategic positioning for the polls.
Meanwhile, the Congress-led all-party alliance in the State gathered in Guwahati for a crucial meeting. Concurrently, the AGP has been conducting its new executive committee meeting since Tuesday.
In the Opposition alliance meeting, prominent figures including Congress State president Bhupen Bora, CLP leader Debabrata Saikia, TMC State president Ripun Bora, AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi, and representatives from the CPI (M) and other regional parties participated. Their primary agenda encompassed discussions on seat-sharing arrangements and strategising for a united front against the BJP and its coalition partners.
