Olen Megu Damin, a native of Mebo Sub-Division in Arunachal Pradesh’s East Siang District, has been conferred with the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award 2022 for her exceptional contributions to folk and traditional music and dance.
Hailing from the Adi community, Olen Megu Damin is celebrated not only as a skilled artist, curator, and choreographer but also as a passionate advocate for social causes, particularly women’s welfare within her community. Her leadership as the former President of the Adi Baane Kebang Women Wing underscores her commitment to empowering women and fostering cultural heritage.
Apart from her artistic prowess, Olen Megu Damin is esteemed for her role as an educator, having served as a dedicated teacher until her recent retirement. Her multifaceted contributions have left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of Arunachal Pradesh.
The Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, also known as the Akademi Puraskar, is the highest honour bestowed by Bharat’s National Academy of Music, Dance & Drama. Recognising excellence and sustained contributions in the performing arts, this award carries not only prestige but also a cash prize of Rs 1,00,000 along with a tamrapatra and an angavastram.
Selected by the distinguished members of the Akademi’s General Council, including eminent musicians, dancers, theatre artists, and scholars, the recipients are chosen for their exemplary work and significant impact in their respective fields. The Sangeet Natak Akademi fellowship and awards will be presented by President Droupadi Murmu in a special investiture ceremony, further honouring the recipients’ achievements and contributions to the cultural heritage of the nation.
