During the ongoing 5th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister N Biren Singh disclosed that in response to the recent Churachandpur arson incident, eight FIRs have been registered. Two of these cases have been referred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for further investigation.
The Chief Minister addressed a calling attention motion raised by Congress MLA Keisham Meghachandra Singh, highlighting the government’s concerted efforts to prevent the recurrence of such incidents. He assured proactive measures for a thorough investigation.
As per CM Biren, among the registered FIRs, two cases involving suspected militant have been handed over to the CBI. So far, authorities have identified 20 individuals allegedly involved in the arson and vandalism.
The Churachandpur incident, marked by a large mob’s attempt to vandalise government buildings including the DC complex and SP office, was strongly condemned by the Chief Minister. He highlighted the use of AK-47s among the mob and emphasised the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order.
The government registered an FIR against an individual accused of inciting violence through a divisive tweet just hours before the incident. Despite the violent outbreak, government properties were largely spared from severe damage, with most documents preserved due to prior digitisation efforts.
CM Biren noted that the incident followed the suspension of a head constable in the district by the SP, stressing that actions were taken within the framework of the law.
