The Congress Party have been accused of engaging in anti-national activities by backing illegal immigrants and calling against updating the NRC in the State. It indicates towards the Grand Old Party’s significant vote bank among the illegal immigrants, mentioned Manipur based socio-political group Meitei Resurgence Forum or MReF.
Citing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s public statements on the party’s refusal to support the Manipuri people in their call for updating the National Register of Citizens-NRC, the MReF stated, “It is widely acknowledged that illegal immigrants have been a significant vote bank for the Congress Party for an extended period. Public documents released by the Meitei Resurgence Forum reveal that over 1,500 families of Kuki Refugees from Myanmar were resettled in Manipur between 1967 and 1973, with voting rights.”
The MReF condemned the walkout of the Congress MLAs, including former CM Okram Ibobi Singh, former minister K Ranjit, former Speaker Th Lokeshwar, Okram Ibobi Singh’s son Okram Suraj Kumar and MPCC president K Meghachandra, in the Assembly during the NRC updation resolution and termed it as “highly regrettable” move.
“Despite their legitimate concerns about the Assembly procedure, they should have prioritised Manipur’s interests by taking part in the resolution for updating the NRC,” the group mentioned in the press release.
The Meitei Resurgence Forum urged the Congress Party to refrain from vote-bank politics and “work against the interests of Manipur and Meiteis”.
The MReF further flagged the politics of vote-bank as the evolving concern of “national security with implications for Bharat’s territorial integrity, alongside the drug menace facing the Northeast and the nation as a whole”.
Apart from this, the Meitei body appreciated the BJP-led Governments at the Central and State for materialising the efforts to address the issue of illegal immigration.
