In a recent Assembly Session, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh revealed the State had identified 6,746 illegal Myanmarese nationals between May 3, 2023, and February 27, 2024.
CM Biren disclosed that out of this figure, 259 individuals from Myanmar were “pushed back” to their home country following the collection of biometric data. The remainder are currently being accommodated in temporary shelters to prevent mingling with the general population.
Furthermore, the CM highlighted the establishment of a reconciliation team led by D Gangmei of the Hill Areas Committee. This team aims to engage in discussions with MLAs who were absent during the session, and to reinstate peace and harmony within the State.
Addressing a calling attention motion, CM Biren urged numerous factions not to levy donations or taxes from travellers on major roads and national highways in the pretext of crisis. He mentioned compensation to 114 individuals have been distributed, with pending verifications for the rest.
Additionally, the CM acknowledged the plight of internally displaced persons (IDPs) due to ongoing violence. To address this, 320 relief camps have been established to cater to their basic needs.
