Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the State police will issue summons to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi regarding the violence that erupted during the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Guwahati.
CM Himanta mentioned Rahul Gandhi will be required to appear before the police in person, with the summons set to be sent after the conclusion of the Lok Sabha polls.
“When someone violates the law, summonses are naturally issued. Rahul Gandhi will receive a summons, and he will have to present himself here after the Lok Sabha elections,” the Assam CM informed reporters during an official event.
He added the summonses issued to Congress MLA Jakir Hussain Sikdar and Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah marked the initial stages of the process.
The CM referenced a case filed by Guwahati Police regarding Congress workers breaking barricades in an attempt to traverse main roads within the city during the yatra held in January.
Initial notices were sent to Sikdar and the party’s Guwahati city general secretary Ramen Kumar Sarma, both of whom have already been questioned by the police.
Subsequently, summonses were issued to the Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, and Borah as well. However, both individuals failed to appear on the scheduled date.
“We have reissued notices to both of them. Saikia has been directed to appear before us on March 6, while Borah has been summoned for March 7,” said a senior police official on the condition of anonymity.
