Renowned author, philanthropist and Infosys Foundation’s former chairperson Sudha Murty received a nomination to the Rajya Sabha on Friday, marking a significant recognition of her contributions to the society.
Expressing delight, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media to announce her nomination, “I am delighted the President has nominated Sudha Murty to the Rajya Sabha. Her contributions to diverse fields including social work, philanthropy, and education have been immense and inspiring.”
PM Modi further highlighted Murty’s nomination as a testament to the strength and potential of women in shaping the nation’s destiny, affirming the significance of her presence in the Upper House of Parliament. He extended his best wishes for her fruitful tenure as a parliamentarian.
“Her presence in the Rajya Sabha is a powerful testament to our ‘Nari Shakti’, exemplifying the strength and potential of women in shaping our nation’s destiny. Wishing her a fruitful Parliamentary tenure,” he added.
Aged 73, Sudha Murty brings a wealth of experience to her new role. Trained as an engineer and renowned as an author, she has received several accolades, including the Padma Shri in 2006 and the Padma Bhushan in 2023, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to various fields.
Murty’s nomination follows the recent appointment of Satnam Singh Sandhu as a member of the Rajya Sabha in January. Sandhu, a prominent educationist, is renowned for founding the Chandigarh Group of Colleges at Landran in Mohali in 2001, and subsequently establishing Chandigarh University in 2012, which achieved distinction by ranking first among private universities in Asia in the QS World Rankings 2023.
