Following the discovery of illicit items in the possession of detainee Amritpal Singh, the Dibrugarh Police has taken into custody the Superintendent of Dibrugarh Central Jail.
In a press briefing, SP VV Rakesh Reddy detailed the investigation’s progression, revealing that a comprehensive search within the jail premises recovered contraband, including mobile phones equipped with remote keypads and other communication devices.
Prompted by these findings, authorities launched a thorough probe into the potential collusion between jail officials, particularly the superintendent, and detainees engaged in unlawful activities. Subsequent inquiries yielded compelling evidence implicating the superintendent in facilitating these illicit operations, necessitating swift action.
Reddy pointed towards the gravity of the situation, citing the heightened risk posed by such activities, particularly with National Security Act (NSA) detainees housed within the facility. The superintendent’s alleged breaches of jail protocols and facilitation of unlawful activities raised serious concerns regarding both law enforcement and national security.
Regarding the legal ramifications, Reddy revealed that a case, numbered 84/24, has been filed under pertinent Sections, including 120B, Section 13(1) (b) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and Section 75 of the Assam Prison Act.
Addressing queries about the ongoing investigation, Reddy assured that every effort would be made to uncover the extent of communication between detainees and external entities. Forensic analyses and other investigative measures will be utilised to determine the full extent of the superintendent’s involvement and the scope of unlawful activities.
Furthermore, Reddy addressed concerns about the welfare of detainees, confirming that those on hunger strike were under regular medical supervision, with necessary steps taken to address any health issues. He reiterated the authorities’ commitment to upholding the rule of law while prioritising the safety and well-being of all inmates.
