Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh inaugurated a helicopter service connecting Imphal and Ukhrul, marking a significant leap in transportation accessibility for residents of the region. Along with the launch ceremony, conducted virtually from the Chief Minister’s secretariat, district transport offices in Jiribam, Kakching, Noney, Pherzawl, and Kamjong were opened.
Expressing optimism about the service’s impact, CM Biren highlighted its potential to alleviate transportation challenges, particularly for residents of Ukhrul district, during medical emergencies and other critical situations.
Taking to social media, CM Biren wrote, “The launching of the Imphal-Ukhrul-Imphal route, Manipur Heli Service will greatly serve in ensuring uninterrupted travel, business and commercial activities in the two districts.”
“The State Government is committed to delivering its various welfare projects in terms of infrastructure development, connectivity, health and education to fulfil the goals for an inclusive growth,” he added further.
The CM commended State Transport Minister Khashim Vashum and department officials for their proactive efforts in introducing the service and thanked the Central Government for initiating the Manipur Heli-service in 2018.
Highlighting the existing routes serviced by Manipur Heli-service, including Imphal-Churachandpur, Imphal-Aizwal via Churachandpur, Imphal-Lairouching, and Imphal-Dimapur via Lairouching, Singh spoke about the service’s substantial impact since its inception, having catered to 31,163 passengers.
He affirmed the government’s commitment to extending the service’s coverage to major areas in the hill districts, beyond just district headquarters.
In a bid to make air travel more accessible, CM Biren announced subsidized fares for routes like Imphal-Jiribam and Imphal-Tamenglong, with the Imphal-Ukhrul fare also set at a subsidized rate of Rs 2,500.
Additionally, the CM urged against roadside donation collections to prevent disruptions to public peace. The launch event was attended by State Transport Minister Khashim Vashum, various ministers, Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba, MLAs, and senior government officials and Ukhrul’s District Commissioner, CSO leaders, and others took part via video conferencing.
Meanwhile, the long-standing demand for an Inner Line Permit System has been fulfilled, ensuring the protection of the indigenous population, said the CM.
