Congress released candidate names for 12 out of 14 seats in Assam for the upcoming Lok Sabha election. One of these remaining two slots will be reserved for its ally Assam Jatiya Parishad-AJP.
AJP is a member of the 16-party Opposition coalition known as the United Opposition Forum or UOF in the State.
“The party after much consideration has released the names of our candidates from Assam. We are confident with the list and are sure of taking on and defeating candidates put up by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and their allies,” said Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah.
In the 2019 elections, the BJP clinched nine out of the 14 seats in the State, with Congress securing three victories – Gaurav Gogoi in Kaliabar, Pradyut Bordoloi in Nagaon, and Abdul Khaleque in Barpeta. The remaining two seats were won by the All India United Democratic Front or AIUDF and an Independent candidate.
While Pradyut Bordoloi will contest again from Nagaon, Gaurav Gogoi will vie for the Jorhat seat. Both incumbents had their constituencies redrawn following a recent delimitation exercise.
Expressing gratitude for his renomination, Bordoloi expressed confidence in securing another victory with the continued support of voters in Nagaon. Notably, Congress opted for Assam unit Seva Dal president Deep Bayan over sitting MP Abdul Khaleque for the Barpeta seat.
Sources within the party suggest that Khaleque may be nominated for the Jania seat in the 2026 Assembly elections. Additionally, former minister Rakibul Hussain, currently an MLA from Samaguri, will contest from Dhubri, a constituency currently represented by AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal.
Other candidates announced include Garjan Mashahary for Kokrajhar, Madhab Rajbanshi for Darrang-Udalguri, Mira Barthakur Goswami for Guwahati, Joyram Engleng for Diphu, Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Choudhury for Karimganj, Surjya Kanta Sarkar for Silchar, Roseline Tirkey for Kaziranga, and Prem Lal Ganju for Sonitpur.
