Responding to changing educational trends, the School Education department of the Manipur Government is set to introduce a new grading system in collaboration with the Board of Secondary Education. This innovative approach will feature grades and grade points, replacing the conventional display of marks in the mark statement cum certificate.
Scheduled to be implemented from the High School Leaving Certificate Examination, 2024, the new grading system aims to promote student well-being and enhance learning outcomes.
Recognising the importance of healthy competition in improving student performance, the Manipur Government acknowledges the need to mitigate stress and pressure among students. The grading system is envisioned as a means to reduce the burden on students, encouraging a better learning environment that prioritises holistic growth over excessive competition.
Moreover, the present system of evaluating answer sheets and awarding marks has its limitations, with discrepancies arising from individual teacher evaluation methods. By transitioning to a grading system, the government aims to standardise assessment practices, ensuring consistency and fairness in evaluating student performance.
Under the new grading system, documents will no longer display total marks or aggregate scores, and no divisions or ranks will be awarded. Instead, only pass or fail status will be indicated, reflecting a shift towards a more comprehensive assessment approach.
Students will be graded based on predefined ranges, with corresponding grade points assigned as follows: A1 (91-100, Grade points 10), A2 (81-90, Grade points 9), B1 (71-80, Grade points 8), B2 (61-70, Grade points 7), C1 (51-60, Grade points 6), C2 (41-50, Grade points 5), D (31-40, Grade points 4), E1 (21-30, Fail), and E2 (00-20, Fail).
It’s important to note that internal assessments and external examinations (80 marks) conducted by the Board will remain unchanged, ensuring the integrity and rigor of the evaluation process.
The introduction of the new grading system represents a significant step towards fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment in Manipur, emphasising the holistic development of students while mitigating undue stress and fostering a culture of lifelong learning.
