In the latest development concerning Bharat’s electoral governance, newly appointed election commissioners, Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, officially assumed their roles on Friday.
Former bureaucrats Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu were appointed as election commissioners on Thursday, becoming the first individuals appointed to the poll panel under the new law governing the appointment of Chief Election Commissioner or CEC and Election Commissioners or ECs.
CEC Rajiv Kumar welcomed the new appointees, describing the importance of their joining at a pivotal moment as the Election Commission prepares for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Kumar highlighted the historic significance of their appointment in ensuring the smooth conduct of the electoral process.
The vacancies in the Election Commission arose following the retirement of Anup Chandra Pandey on February 14 and the sudden resignation of Arun Goel on March 8, creating an urgent need for new appointments to maintain the Commission’s operational efficiency.
Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu bring extensive administrative experience to their new roles, both belonging to the 1988-batch of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). Kumar hails from the Kerala cadre, while Sandhu served in the Uttarakhand cadre, showcasing a diverse range of administrative expertise.
Their appointment underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring a robust and impartial electoral process, with the Election Commission poised to benefit from their wealth of experience and expertise in navigating the complexities of electoral governance.
As Bharat gears up for the Lok Sabha elections, the induction of Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu into the Election Commission reaffirms the Commission’s dedication to upholding democratic principles and facilitating free, fair, and transparent elections.
