As Tripura gears up for the Lok Sabha elections in 2024, preparations are underway to ensure smooth and peaceful voting in the State’s two constituencies. The elections are scheduled to be conducted in two phases, on April 19 and April 26.
Tripura comprises two Lok Sabha seats: Tripura West and Tripura East, both currently held by the BJP. The West Lok Sabha constituency, along with the bypoll for the Ramnagar Assembly constituency, will go to polls on April 19, followed by the Tripura East constituency on April 26.
Addressing the media in Agartala, District Election Officer Dr Vishal Kumar and West Tripura Superintendent of Police Kiran Kumar informed that out of the 793 polling stations planned for the West Tripura Parliamentary constituency, 150 have been flagged as “vulnerable.” Additionally, certain polling stations will be designated as model polling stations, women-based stations, and youth-oriented stations.
The security situation is being closely monitored, with 14 companies of security forces currently available and reinforcements expected soon. Similar security assessments are being conducted for the East Tripura Parliamentary constituency.
Dr Kumar urged voters, especially the youth, to actively participate in the electoral process. He expressed confidence in the support of law enforcement agencies, central paramilitary forces, and other stakeholders to ensure a fair and peaceful election.
A total of 14,61,836 electors are enrolled for the West Lok Sabha constituency, including 7,33,645 male voters, 7,28,315 females, and 58 transgender individuals. Additionally, 5,920 service voters and 7,818 people with disabilities are registered.
The Ramnagar bypoll, necessitated by the demise of BJP MLA Surajit Dutta, will see 45,669 voters exercising their franchise.
Dr Kumar assured that preparations are on track, with training sessions for polling personnel underway. The first level of EVM checking has been completed, with commissioning scheduled to commence shortly.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar announced that the Lok Sabha elections in 2024 will be conducted in seven phases across Bharat, with polling scheduled from April 19 to June 1 and vote counting on June 4.
