In a major jolt to Assam Congress, as many as 1,500 party workers joined the Bharatiya Janata Party-BJP in Karimganj district, led by Minister Piyush Hazarika. This move is expected to strengthen the electoral prospects of Kripanath Mallah, potentially increasing his vote bank by an estimated 20,000 in the district. Although Kamalaksha Purkayastha, a three-time MLA from North Karimganj, hasn’t formally joined the BJP, he has extended his support to the party.
