In a significant stride towards healthcare advancement, the Nagaland Government proudly announced that 78 villages across the State have successfully attained tuberculosis-free status.
This commendable achievement encompasses 34 villages in Phek district, 19 in Longleng, nine in Wokha, four in Mokokchung, and three in Kohima, as confirmed by a state official.
The declaration coincides with World Tuberculosis Day, observed annually on March 24. This day holds historical significance, marking the announcement by Dr Robert Koch in 1882 of his discovery of the bacterium responsible for tuberculosis, a breakthrough pivotal in advancing diagnostic and treatment methodologies.
The achievement underscores the dedicated efforts of the National TB Elimination Programme team, which conducted comprehensive surveys leading to the identification of these villages as tuberculosis-free zones.
According to reports, Nagaland recorded 4,284 active TB cases in 2023, emphasizing the importance of such initiatives in combating the disease effectively.
This milestone not only signifies progress in healthcare but also reflects the collective determination and collaborative efforts of the government and communities towards ensuring the well-being of the populace.
