In a dramatic scene in Baltimore, a bridge partially crumbled following a collision with a container ship, leading to seven individuals plunging into the water. The incident occurred at around 1:30 am local time on March 26.
The Francis Scott Key Bridge, spanning 3 kilometre and forming a vital part of the I-95 interstate, serves as a major artery connecting the east coast of the United States, stretching from Miami, Florida to Maine.
The collapse of the Baltimore Bridge ensued after a vessel violently struck it, causing sections to plummet into the Patapsco River. “All lanes closed both directions for incident on I-695 Key Bridge. Traffic is being detoured,” announced the Maryland Transportation Authority.
The impact brought traffic to an abrupt standstill, prompting the redirection of several drivers.
Multiple agencies, including the Coast Guard and Fire department, swiftly declared the incident a mass casualty event. A spokesperson for the Baltimore City Fire department confirmed the collapse as a “mass casualty event,” as per a report by BBC.
Chief Kevin Cartwright, communications director for the Baltimore City Fire department, disclosed that “as many as seven individuals and several vehicles” had fallen into the river following the bridge collapse. A concerted multi-agency rescue operation, initiated by the Fire department jointly with the US Coast Guard and other Maryland agencies, is currently underway.
The Maryland Transportation Authority verified the closure of all lanes in both directions, with traffic being rerouted either along the I-95 interstate through the city or via the harbour tunnel.
Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott acknowledged the tragic incident and assured the public of ongoing efforts, stating, “I’m aware of and en route to the incident at the Key Bridge… Emergency personnel are on scene, and efforts are underway.”
As of the latest reports, there are no confirmed casualties attributable to the Baltimore Bridge collapse. However, Baltimore city police indicated that workers may be trapped in the water following the bridge’s collapse.
Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski Jr expressed awareness of the situation and ongoing rescue efforts, urging support for those affected, “Please pray for those impacted.”
