Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has recently characterised the current members of Congress as ‘fixed deposits’ of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
In a media address, CM Himanta stated, “Currently, the Assam Congress is in our hands, not controlling them, but our people are only in Congress… they are our ‘fixed deposits,’ whenever we need we can encash it. Whenever any leaders are required for PM Modi, we will bring them.”
Furthermore, highlighting that accept for few family members, the CM noted that the majority of Congress members belong to the BJP and in a significant number they either joined the saffron party or BJP ally AGP in the past one and a half months. He also mentioned the departure of booth-level workers from the Congress to join the BJP.
“I believe that by 2026 there will be no party called the Congress party in Assam and will survive in small pockets of the State,” added CM Himanta.
