In a notable political development in West Bengal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting with Rekha Patra, the BJP candidate from Basirhat and a survivor of the Sandeshkhali incident. Their conversation encompassed crucial aspects of Patra’s campaign preparations, the growing support for the BJP among the populace, and pertinent issues concerning the troubled region.
During their conversation, PM Modi lauded Rekha Patra as “Shakti Swaroopa”, acknowledging her resilience and strength in the face of adversity. Rekha Patra, who was leading a quiet life as a housewife in the Patrapara area, rose to prominence as a vocal advocate against alleged sexual violence in Sandeshkhali.
She provided insights into the challenges faced by women in the area, underscoring the pressing need to address their plight.
“The situation in Sandeshkhali has been a cause for concern since 2011. If we had the freedom to vote without fear, such a scenario wouldn’t have persisted. My aim is to safeguard the dignity of the people here, and this fight will persist,” remarked Patra, reflecting on the tumultuous events unfolding in the region.
After Sandeshkhali candidate Rekha Patra, PM Modi called Krishnanagar BJP candidate Rajmata Amrita Roy. The PM called a total of three women BJP candidates across the country on Tuesday. Out of these two are from Bengal and one from Kerala’s Alathur constituency Dr TN Sarasuk.
