Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit and attend public events in Lakhimpur and Hojai in Assam on April 6, announced Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma. The CM additionally stated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief JP Nadda are expected to visit the State soon.
Amit Shah’s scheduled visit to Assam in early March was deferred following the announcement of election dates. His itinerary included leading the BJP’s Lok Sabha campaign with a public rally in Hojai and inaugurating the Bardowa project in Nagaon district, initiated by the State Government. This project seeks to transform the birthplace of Srimanta Sankardev into a vibrant tourist destination, ensuring the preservation of its rich history and cultural heritage.
As the notification for the by-poll to five Lok Sabha seats in Assam was announced on Wednesday, the electoral scenario is picking up momentum.
Set for April 26, this phase has witnessed intense competition in districts such as Nagaon, Darrang-Udalguri, Diphu (ST), Silchar (SC), and Karimganj. Notable figures from the region have thrown their hats into the ring, vying for parliamentary seats.
In a significant development, Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi is gearing up to contest against BJP’s Suresh Bora and AIUDF’s Aminul Islam in Nagaon.
In Darrang-Udalguri, there is a battle between BJP MP Dilip Saikia and Congress candidate Madhab Rajbongshi. Silchar (SC) is offering an interesting contest with Assam Excise Minister Parimal Suklabaidya as the BJP representative, who is set to take on Congress youth leader Suraj Kant Sarkar.
Candidates can file their nominations till April 4, after which the nominations will be verified on April 5. The window for drawing the nomination closes on April 8.
Concluding Assam visit, Amit Shah is expected to visit Tripura for two days from April 7. There he will address a rally along with a holding roadshow as part of the BJP’s campaign for its candidates in the two Lok Sabha seats and chairing an organisational meeting of party leaders the next day.
“Amit Shah, who is scheduled to address a rally in Mizoram on April 7, is likely to arrive in Tripura on the same day. He will hold an organisational meeting, address a rally in Gumati district’s Udaipur and a roadshow in Agartala,” informed BJP state general secretary Amit Rakshit.
Rakshit mentioned Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha met senior party leaders to discuss Shah’s visit to the State on the night of Thursday.
Elections to the Tripura West Lok Sabha constituency and by-poll to the Ramnagar Assembly seat will be held on April 19, while the Tripura East parliamentary constituency will go to polls on April 26.
Rakshit said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda and party MP Hema Malini are likely to visit the Northeastern State soon to join the party’s campaign.
“We have already sent a wishlist for star campaigners to the party’s central leadership. We have started campaigns for the elections with Chief Minister Manik Saha leading us,” he said.
The BJP has fielded Rajya Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb from the Tripura West Lok Sabha seat, while Kriti Devi Debbarman is contesting the Tripura East parliamentary constituency.
