Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a scathing attack on the Congress, accusing the party of denying benefits to the poor by failing to pay taxes amounting to ₹1,823.08 crore. Responding to the Congress’ claim of receiving fresh notices from the Income Tax Department, the CM asserted tax evasion hampers welfare activities and undermines support for the underprivileged.
“If the Congress avoids paying taxes, it signifies opposition to welfare initiatives and neglect of the downtrodden,” declared CM Himanta, asserting upon the critical role of tax revenue in funding essential services such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
Rejecting the Congress’ accusation of “tax terrorism” by the ruling BJP, CM Himanta argued that tax compliance ensures funding for public welfare projects and is not tantamount to coercion. He urged the Congress to redirect its efforts towards election campaigning instead of staging daily protests against tax notices.
