In a significant setback for the Congress party in Assam, All India Professionals’ Congress president and MP Gaurav Gogoi’s close aide Gauravv Somani announced his resignation from the party’s primary membership on March 30.
In a letter addressed to Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhupen Borah, Somani reflected on his 24-year-long journey within the Congress party, tracing back to his initiation into student politics with NSUI in 1999.
From his early involvement in the Youth Congress to his recent roles as secretary of State Congress, spokesperson for the Congress party in Assam, and State president of All India Professionals’ Congress Assam unit, Somani expressed gratitude for the opportunities to serve alongside dedicated individuals and contribute to the party’s vision and objectives.
He criticised the internal discord and conflicts among leaders, which, he claimed, had undermined the party’s credibility and eroded the trust and morale of grassroots workers. Somani talked about the toxic environment within the party caused by incessant power struggles and personal agendas among leaders, hindering effective service to the people and upholding democratic principles.
In the letter, Gauravv Somani wrote, “One of the primary reasons for my decision is the unsatisfactory leadership presently within the Assam Congress, which has regrettably failed to effectively address the pressing issues faced by the people of our State. Despite our collective efforts and dedication, the leadership’s inability to formulate and implement strategic solutions to tackle the myriad challenges confronting our constituents has been disheartening.”
