Demand for the hand-woven Assamese Gamosa has gone up as the Lok Sabha elections and Rongali Bihu are approaching nearer. The traditional piece of cloth is one of Assam’s most recognisable cultural symbols. The high demand and probability of increased income have kept the artisans and weavers completely occupied in weaving Gamosa in Guwahati and across the State.
The Assamese Gamosa received the Geographical Indication or GI tag in 2017 under the Geographical Indication of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.
The Lok Sabha elections for 14 seats in Assam will be held in three phases starting on April 19. The Rongali Bihu or Bohag Bihu, which marks the beginning of Assamese New Year, will be celebrated across the State in mid-April.
