In a remarkable cultural achievement, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that 19 traditional products and crafts from Assam, including iconic items like Bihu Dhol, Jaapi, and several emblematic articles of the Bodo community, have been bestowed with the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

Outlining the importance of this achievement, CM Himanta expressed his delight, stating, “Six prestigious GI Tags have been granted to traditional crafts with support from NABARD, RO Guwahati, and facilitated by Padma Shri Dr Rajani Kant, GI Expert.”
Among the recognised products are Assam’s Jaapi, a traditional bamboo hat, and Bihu Dhol, a revered drum played during the Bihu festival, along with other crafts deeply ingrained in the State’s cultural heritage like Sarthebari Metal Craft (traditional handmade bell metal utensils found in Assam’s Barpeta), Pani Meteka or Water Hyacinth, Mising Handloom Products, Asharikandi Terracotta.
