In Assam, nine candidates filed their nomination papers for the second phase of Lok Sabha polls on Tuesday. Encompassing five parliamentary constituencies, this phase is set to take place on April 26.
Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma was present during the nomination filing of BJP candidates Amarsingh Tisso for the Diphu (ST) seat, Parimal Suklabaodya for Silchar seat and Kripanath Mallah for Karimganj seat. He asserted these polls serve as a reaffirmation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, ensuring the continuity of developmental schemes initiated under his tenure. He particularly highlighted the transformative impact witnessed in the tribal regions of the State, crediting PM Modi’s proactive measures for ushering in peace and development.
The filing of nominations showcased a diverse spectrum of candidates vying for electoral success. In Diphu (ST), two contenders, including an Independent nominee, are into the fray. Similarly, in Karimganj, AIUDF candidate Sahabul Alam Choudhury and Independent aspirant Binoy Krishna Roy joined the electoral competition.
Silchar (SC) witnessed an uptick in nominations with three additional candidates, representing various political affiliations. Former Lok Sabha MP Radhey Shyam Biswas of All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) entered the electoral fray, further adding to the list of candidates.
The Nagaon constituency saw the emergence of two Independent candidates, Abu Shama and Sikha Sarma, alongside Saiful Islam Chowdhury of Asom Jana Morcha. In Darrang-Udalguri, Lalit Pegu of Voters Party International (VPI) contributed to the growing list of contenders.
Overall, the tally of nominations filed for the second phase polls, encompassing Nagaon, Darrang-Udalguri, Diphu (ST), Silchar (SC), and Karimganj, now stands at 14. The upcoming phase promises high-profile contests, including Congress sitting MP Pradyut Bordoloi against BJP’s Suresh Bora in Nagaon and BJP sitting MP Dilip Saikia against Congress candidate Madhab Rajbongshi in Darrang-Udalguri.
With the nomination filing deadline set for April 4, scrutiny scheduled for April 5, and the last date for withdrawal of nominations on April 8, the electoral battleground in Assam is heating up. In the initial phase, 35 candidates are contending across the Kaziranga, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Sonitpur, and Lakhimpur constituencies, setting the stage for a riveting electoral showdown.
