The Assam Rifles, stationed at their Zokhawsang camp in Mizoram, have accused the State Government led by CM Lalduhoma of harassment amidst a dispute over interrupted water supply.
The contention arose after the State Water Department ceased water supply to the KLP Zokhawsang camp since March 25, leading to escalating tensions between the Assam Rifles and the State authorities.
In a formal letter addressed to the Home Commissioner of Mizoram, the Assam Rifles highlighted the urgent need for resolution, citing the adverse impact on daily operations and the well-being of personnel stationed at Zokhawsang.
Despite the Assam Rifles’ plea for intervention, including discussions with the PHE Minister of Mizoram, the situation remains unresolved, casting doubt on the government’s commitment to its responsibilities towards the paramilitary force.
Furthermore, the letter highlighted, “The Assam Rifles, being a vital institution responsible for maintaining peace and security in Aizawl, cannot afford to operate without basic amenities like water. Senior Executive Engineer also brought out the point raised by Assam Rifles during the Chief Minister’s visit at Zokhawsang regarding inadequate water and electricity supply, which remains unresolved by the State Government.”
The letter mentioned the halt in water supply jeopardizes the health and safety of around 200 troops and nine families as well as 27 students and 13 staff from all over the State residing in Zokhawsang camp as part of educational project Sentinal facilitated by the Assam Rifles in collaboration with NEIDO.
Condemning the actions of the State Water Department, the paramilitary organisation highlighted further, “The Assam Rifles approached the PHE Minister to allow continuation of water supply at Zokhawsang, despite that the Senior Executive Engineer refused to comply with his direction. Additionally, it reflects poorly on the government’s commitment to fulfilling its obligations and responsibilities towards the Assam Rifles, shamelessly treating them in a manner worse than enemies.”
