Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to visit Manipur to strengthen the Lok Sabha election campaign efforts on April 14. During his visit, Shah is expected to address a public gathering at the Hapta Kangjeibung ground in Imphal, as per State BJP officials.
“Amit Shah is a key campaigner for the BJP, and arrangements are being made for his rally on April 14,” stated a leader from the party’s State unit.
Shah’s last visit to Manipur was last year amidst ethnic tensions on May 29. During his visit the Home Minister stayed for three days.
Imphal East District Magistrate Diana Khumanthem confirmed that permission has been granted for the public meeting. Alongside Shah, Chief Minister N Biren Singh is anticipated to attend the event, which was organised by the State BJP.
Elections will be held in Manipur in two phases. The Inner Manipur seat will vote in the first phase on April 19 along with some parts of the Outer Manipur constituency. The remaining parts of Outer Manipur will vote in the second phase on April 26.
The BJP has fielded state Education Minister Thounaojam Basanta Kumar Singh in Inner Manipur. It has not fielded any candidate in Outer Manipur and extended support to Naga People’s Front nominee K Timothy Zimik.
