In Assam, eight candidates have submitted their nomination papers for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in four constituencies slated for the third phase on May 7, according to a poll official.
In a bid to represent their constituencies, four candidates have filed nominations for the Kokrajhar seat, two for Guwahati, and one each for Barpeta and Dhubri constituencies.
In the Kokrajhar (ST) seat, NDA and United People’s Party Liberal or UPPL candidate Jayanta Basumatary, Voters Party International or VPI’s Lalit Pegu, and Independents Prithvi Narayan Deb Mech and Ranjoy Brahma have officially entered the electoral race.
For the Guwahati seat, Congress candidate Mira Borthakur Goswami and Ekam Sanatan Bharat Dal’s Amitabh Sarma have submitted their papers, while Independent candidate Dulu Ahmed has filed for the Barpeta seat. Hafiz Burhanuddin of the National Road Map Party of India has presented his documents for the Dhubri constituency.
With the last date for filing nominations set for April 19 and scrutiny scheduled for the following day, candidates have a limited window to set their positions. The deadline for withdrawal of nominations is April 22, marking a crucial phase in the electoral process.
Assam’s elections are being conducted in three phases, with a total of 35 candidates vying for five seats in the first phase on April 19, and 61 nominees contesting across five constituencies in the second phase on April 26. In the outgoing Lok Sabha, BJP held nine seats, Congress three, AIUDF one, with an Independent MP also in the mix.
