In a pioneering move towards inclusivity in democracy, a polling booth staffed entirely by differently-abled (PwD) polling officers has been inaugurated at Chintan Bhawan in Gangtok district. Spearheaded by Presiding Officer Indra Chettri and aided by a team of 05 PwD Polling Officers, this initiative prioritises equal participation and accessibility for voters with disabilities in Sikkim’s Arithang constituency.
Situated on the ground floor of Chintan Bhawan, the polling booth caters particularly to part 9 of the 26 Arithang Constituency (26/9). All Assured Minimum Facilities or AMFs have been meticulously provided, including well-maintained infrastructure, furniture, separate toilets, drinking water facilities, shades, ramps, and wheelchairs for voters with disabilities.
This polling booth, managed entirely by PwDs, serves as a symbol of inclusivity and accessibility, setting a standard not only in Gangtok but throughout Sikkim’s constituencies. Equipped with AMFs, these model stations represent a collective endeavor to streamline the electoral process, ensuring efficiency and transparency.
Delegating polling booth management to individuals from varied backgrounds, including those with disabilities, underscores the Election Commission’s dedication to the core tenets of impartial and transparent elections. This proactive measure not only promotes inclusivity but also strengthens the democratic fabric of our nation.
