Amidst a robust security presence, 51.03 per cent of voters exercised their franchise in Nagaland’s lone Lok Sabha seat by 3 pm, according to officials. However, six districts in Eastern Nagaland reported zero voter turnout due to a boycott call by various Naga groups advocating for Statehood demands.
The Eastern Nagaland districts, home to approximately four lakh eligible voters, saw no participation in polling as urged by the groups.
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, after casting his vote at a school in Kohima, revealed the State Government’s proposal for establishing an autonomous body to facilitate development in Eastern Nagaland and support its residents.
“The Election Commission has served a show cause notice to the Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation-ENPO for calling the people to abstain from voting,” stated the CM.
Nagaland Chief Electoral Officer R Vyasan issued a show cause notice to the ENPO, hinting at potential action under the Indian Penal Code.
Meanwhile, voting commenced for Nagaland’s sole Lok Sabha seat under stringent security arrangements on Friday, confirmed election officials.
