In Assam’s first phase of Lok Sabha election today, voters turned out in force to participate in the democratic process, resulting in an impressive 45.12 per cent overall turnout by 1 pm. Notably, female voters outnumbered their male counterparts across all five Lok Sabha constituencies of Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Kaziranga, Lakhimpur, and Sonitpur.
This remarkable trend underscores the fervent civic engagement among female voters, highlighting their determination to contribute to the electoral process.
The surge in female voter participation was evident from the early hours, with women lining up at polling stations as early as 5 am to cast their ballots before continuing with their daily routines.
In a significant statistical shift, 43,64,859 women exercised their voting rights, surpassing the 42,82,887 male voters in the five constituencies. Notably, the representation of the third gender remained marginal, with only 123 individuals casting their votes.
Despite the remarkable turnout, the disparity in candidate representation persists, with only four women candidates contesting, constituting a mere 11.4 per cent of the total 35 contestants.
The total number of male and female voters in the Kaziranga parliamentary constituency stands at 10,24,883 and 10,25,210 respectively while Sonitpur has 8,21,012 female voters and 8,12,755 male voters.
On the other hand, Jorhat constituency has 8,78,192 women and 8,48,923 men; Dibrugarh has 8,49,563 women voters and 8,09,990 males; and Lakhimpur has 7,90,882 women voters and 7,86,335 male voters.
Apart from Assam, the other Northeastern States also witnessed high voter turnout with Tripura topping the charts at an impressive 53.04 per cent, followed by Meghalaya at 48.91 per cent while Manipur has registered a turnout of 46.92 per cent, as of 1 pm.
The high voter turnout in the Northeastern States stands as a testament to the thriving democratic ethos in this region.
