The Assam Government has taken a significant step towards improving the educational experience for students by issuing a directive aimed at reducing the weight of school bags starting from the upcoming academic session 2024-25.
In a move to alleviate the physical strain on students, the State’s Education department has introduced specific weight limits for school bags across different classes.
According to the notification, students in Classes 1 and 2 are advised to carry bags weighing between 1.5 to 2 kilograms. For Classes 3 to 5, the permissible weight limit has been set at 2 to 3 kilograms. Similarly, students in Classes 6 to 8 are allowed to carry bags weighing between 3 to 4 kilograms, while those in Classes 9 and 10 have a maximum limit of 5 kilograms for their school bags.
This decision reflects the government’s commitment to prioritizing the holistic well-being of students, taking into account both their physical health and mental wellness. Studies have highlighted the adverse effects of heavy school bags on students’ health, including back pain and posture issues, as well as psychological stress.
By implementing these weight restrictions, the Assam Government aims to create a more conducive learning environment, where students can focus on their studies without the burden of carrying excessively heavy bags. This initiative highlights the government’s dedication to enhancing the overall educational experience and promoting the welfare of students across the State.
