In Assam’s Bongaigaon district, a young girl’s aspiration to become a cop was crushed with her rape and murder. She secured the first division posthumously in her Class 10 examinations, results of which were declared on Saturday.
The girl had gone missing on the last day of her exams on March 4. Her body was recovered near the New Bongaigaon Railway Market on the night of March 8. Subsequently, people of Bongaigaon town blocked roads and rail tracks for many hours, demanding justice and a thorough investigation on March 10.
Later that night, Assam Police caught the main perpetrator from the district and jailed him. Police said the accused held the 16 years’ old girl captive before committing the heinous crime and most probably his accomplices too sexually assaulted her.
Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh confirmed the case had been transferred to CID due to its “sensitivity” and soon “the team would reach a conclusion in due course”.
Child rights activist Miguel Das informed, “This brilliant child had so many aspirations, and unfulfilled dreams. She wanted to be a cop with the Assam Police. However, in a society that is rife with criminals, dreams of children are crushed every single day.” The activist added he would do all in his capacity to ensure that the accused is not let out of jail.
Taking to social media to convey the girl’s exam results, Miguel Das wrote, “The child from Bongaigaon has scored a First Division. But she is not here with us to celebrate. She was raped and killed by a criminal, who crushed the dreams of this child. Stay happy, dear child, in your place of rest. You shall be remembered and celebrated, today and every day.”
A total of 1,05,873 students secured first division in the Class 10 exams held by the Secondary Education Board of Assam or SEBA. The overall passing percentage was 75.7 per cent – 74.41 percent among girl students and for 77.28 per cent among boys.
