The European Union or EU announced today that Indian citizens can now apply for multiple entry Schengen visas with extended validity, bringing promising news for Indian travellers.
Under the newly introduced visa “cascade” regime, Indian nationals residing in India can avail themselves of long-term, multi-entry Schengen visas. These visas, valid for up to two years, are offered to individuals with an established travel history, provided their passport validity allows for it.
The European Commission’s adoption of specific rules on April 18 aims to enhance visa accessibility for Indian nationals, surpassing the standard regulations outlined in the Visa Code.
As per the updated regime, Indian travellers can qualify for a two-year visa after lawfully obtaining and utilising two visas within the previous three years. Subsequently, eligible applicants may receive a five-year visa, subject to passport validity.
During the validity period of these visas, holders enjoy travel privileges equivalent to visa-free nationals, facilitating seamless travel within the Schengen area.
This decision reflects the EU’s commitment to fostering enhanced cooperation on migration policy under the EU-India Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility. Facilitating people-to-people contacts remains a pivotal aspect of this collaboration, highlighting Bharat’s significance as a strategic partner for the EU.
Schengen visas permit holders to travel freely within the Schengen area for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. While the visas are not restricted by purpose, they do not grant the right to work.
The Schengen area encompasses 29 European countries, including 25 EU Member States, along with Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland.
