Additional sessions judge Ravi Kumar Diwakar has alerted the Uttar Pradesh Police about a disturbing development – he’s been receiving “malicious calls and death threats from international numbers.”
Expressing deep concern over the threatening calls, Judge Diwakar has formally requested an investigation into the matter. In a letter addressed to SSP Sushil Chandrabhan Ghule, he highlighted the gravity of the situation, as per numerous media reports, stating, “which is deeply concerning.”
Judge Diwakar, known for his pivotal role in ordering a videography survey of the Gyanvapi complex in 2022, has previously raised security concerns. Initially granted Y-category security by the Allahabad High Court following the Gyanvapi judgment, the level of protection was later downgraded to X-category.
Presently, Judge Diwakar’s security detail comprises two personnel. However, concerns have been raised about its adequacy, particularly as the personnel lack weapons to counter potential threats armed with automatic guns and modern weaponry, stated media reports.
Reflecting on the atmosphere of fear surrounding his work, Judge Diwakar had remarked in 2022, “The fear is so much that my family is always concerned about my safety and I am concerned about their safety.”
Last year, a member of the Popular Front of India or PFI was arrested near Judge Diwakar’s residence in Lucknow. Consequently, security measures were implemented, including assigning a gunner to guard the house of Justice Diwakar’s brother, who serves as an additional district judge. However, security arrangements were later withdrawn amid the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
Recently transferred to Bareilly, Justice Diwakar has taken proactive measures in addressing societal issues. He initiated suo motu action on the 2018 Bareilly riots case, summoning senior cleric Tauqeer Raza to stand trial as the alleged mastermind.
