As the voting is undergoing in second phase of Lok Sabha elections in Assam, the constituencies of Karimganj and Nagaon emerge as pivotal battlegrounds for Congress. Amidst a triangular contest against the BJP and the AIUDF, the Grand Old Party is grappling with the challenge of maintaining its foothold in these regions. With intense campaigning, the elections witness fierce competition as all parties seek for power.
Barak Valley’s Karimganj, popular for its Bengali-dominated population, has traditionally backed the BJP. In 2019, Kripanath Mallah of the BJP secured a significant victory in the constituency. Now, Mallah faces stiff competition from Sahabul Islam Choudhury of the AIUDF and Advocate Hafeez Rashid Ahmed Choudhury of the Congress. While the BJP strives to consolidate its stronghold, the AIUDF and Congress are aggressively courting the minority voter base.
Brahmaputra Valley’s Nagaon has historically been a battleground constituency. Currently held by the Congress, it saw a reversal of fortunes in 2019 when the AIUDF supported Congress, leading to its win after a 25-year hiatus. However, the BJP is making a robust attempt to reclaim the seat, fielding former Congress member Suresh Borah. The AIUDF, on the other hand, has selected Aminul Islam.
In Nagaon, incumbent MP Pradyut Bordoloi is campaigning on a platform pinpointing economic disparities under BJP regime, blaming the government of widening the gap between rich and poor. Meanwhile, in Karimganj, Congress candidate Hafeez Rashid Ahmed Choudhury alleges BJP’s caste-based politics and ensures equal development opportunities.
However, the BJP is confident in its development narrative, with Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma asserting that government schemes have benefitted all sections of society, including minorities. His outreach to Muslim voters marks a significant shift in BJP’s strategy, aiming to secure votes from a community it previously distanced itself from.
Badruddin Ajmal and his party AIUDF blamed Congress for ignoring Muslim interests and facilitating BJP’s rise. He claims widespread Muslim support, challenging Congress’ dominance in the region.
