In the wake of torrential downpours, vital transportation links connecting Barak Valley and Dima Hasao district in Assam, as well as neighboring states like Tripura, Mizoram, and Manipur, have been severed due to landslides and road washouts.
Intense rainfall in Dima Hasao district, Assam, triggered landslides and flooding, leading to widespread disruptions in both road and rail travel.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed officials to expedite the restoration of transportation networks and provide assistance to those affected by the relentless heavy rains.
The Assam Chief Minister’s Office stated, “CM Himanta Biswa Sarma is closely monitoring the flooding and landslides caused by heavy rainfall in Dima Hasao and Barak Valley. Sabyasachi De, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), noted that while railway tracks at several locations have been submerged in mud and water due to flooding, no significant damages have been reported thus far.
Meanwhile, incessant rainfall has led to waterlogging in numerous areas of Dima Hasao district, particularly in Haflong. Authorities have shuttered schools in Haflong and urged residents to refrain from unnecessary travel.
Officials reported that continuous rainfall since Wednesday night, coupled with flooding and landslides, has severely disrupted normal life across various areas of Dima Hasao district, Assam. The Dima Hasao District Disaster Management Authority has advised against non-essential travel until May 4.
Furthermore, a segment of the Haflong-Silchar Road between Harangajao and Miyungkro has been washed away by the rain, leaving numerous vehicles stranded and severely hampering communication channels.
