Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a scathing attack on the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) Government in West Bengal during consecutive rallies, accusing the party of engaging in corruption and the politics of appeasement. PM Modi alleged that the TMC has relegated Hindus to the status of “second-class citizens” in the State.
Addressing gatherings in Bardhaman-Durgapur and Krishnanagar on May 3, the PM criticised the TMC administration’s alleged neglect towards the victims in Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas, where allegations of sexual abuse involving leaders of the ruling party have emerged.
PM Modi stated, “Due to its appeasement politics, the State Government failed to take action against the main accused in the Sandeshkhali case, named Shajahan Sheikh. Despite numerous atrocities against women, the TMC shielded the main accused.”
He questioned the treatment of Hindus in Bengal, referencing reported remarks by TMC MLA Humayun Kabir about “throwing Hindus in the Bhagirathi River”. PM Modi expressed dismay over such rhetoric, asking whether appeasement took precedence over humanity for the TMC.
Besides, PM Modi raised concerns about the recent seizure of arms and ammunition in Sandeshkhali during a raid, questioning whether these weapons were intended to “strengthen democracy” in the State.
Last month, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged that the arms and ammunition seized by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) from a house in Sandeshkhali were planted by central agencies. She described the CBI raid as a “staged” event orchestrated by the Central Government to undermine the State Government amidst the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
Mamata Banerjee, while addressing an election rally on April 27, remarked, “Nobody knows where it was recovered from. Maybe, it was brought from their (CBI) car and presented as recovered items.”
