As the third phase of polling on May 7 approaches, Assam braces for the significant political event, with over 81 lakh voters gearing up to exercise their franchise across four Lok Sabha constituencies.
Official data from the Election Commission reveals a staggering total of 81,77,207 voters, including 28,116 service voters. Of these, 41,27,099 are male, 40,84,130 are female, and 112 belong to the third gender category. A network of 9,516 polling stations has been established to ensure a smooth electoral process.
In the electoral event 47 candidates are vying for victory across the four constituencies. Kokrajhar sees a crowded field with 12 candidates, while Barpeta and Dhubri witness 14 and 13 candidates respectively. In Guwahati, 8 hopefuls are in contention.
Both, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), comprising the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), and the Congress have fielded candidates in all four seats.
One of the focal points of attention is the prestigious Guwahati seat, where both major parties have nominated women candidates and political newcomers. Bijuli Kalita Medhi, representing the BJP, faces off against Mira Barthakur Goswami from the Congress.
Notable contests include AIUDF Chief Badruddin Ajmal defending his Dhubri seat against Congress stalwart Rockybul Hussain, a former Assam cabinet minister. Additionally, in the Bongaigon seat, a triangular fight is expected between NDA consensus candidate Phani Bhushan Choudhury of the AGP, Deep Bayan of the Congress, and Manoranjan Talukdar of the CPI-M (Marxist).
Assam gears up for a crucial phase of democracy, where the electorate’s decisions will shape the future trajectory of the State’s representation in the Lok Sabha.
