Tragedy struck in Manipur’s rural areas as lightning strikes claimed lives and left many individuals injured. In Yangdong Awang Leikai, Kakching, 45-year-old farmer Huidrom Nilakanta lost his life while working in his paddy field. The lightning struck around 1:30 pm on Sunday, causing shock and sorrow in the local community.
Nilakanta’s wife, Romila, who was with him at the time, also sustained injuries in the incident. In another part of the district, Lourembam Basant Singh, 53, faced a similar fate while working in his own paddy field in Lourembam Maning Leikai. He suffered severe injuries from a lightning strike around 4 pm on the same day.
These incidents add to a series of recent lightning-related tragedies in Manipur. Just a week earlier, on April 11, 2024, 11-year-old Telem Suraj lost his life to a lightning strike while playing near the Agriculture Quarters under the Lamphel police station in Imphal west district.
