A remarkable moment took place today as 104-year-old Haripriya Barua cast her vote at a polling station at Abhayapuri in Assam’s Barpeta district, exemplifying unwavering dedication to democracy despite her age and vision impairments.
Expressing her joy, she exclaimed, “I am so happy. I am 104 years old. My vision is not clear, I always stay at home.” This rare outing filled her with excitement, displaying her enthusiasm to participate in the democratic process. Despite facing mobility challenge, Haripriya Barua’s determination to vote resonates deeply.
Meanwhile, tensions escalated in Assam’s Mankachar under the Dhubri parliamentary constituency, where a scuffle erupted between two groups at the No 158 polling booth, disrupting the polling process.
Amidst these incidents, Assam witnessed a voter turnout of 27.34 per cent across its four constituencies during the third phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections by 11:30 am. Kokrajhar recorded the highest turnout at 28.28 per cent, followed by Dhubri at 27.77 per cent, Barpeta at 27.19 per cent, and Guwahati at 26.25 per cent.
The significant constituency of Kamrup Metropolitan stands out with a large voter base of 1,055,684 individuals, reflecting a diverse demographic profile. Notably, the addition of 15,960 new voters aged 18 to 19 years highlights the increasing youth participation in the electoral process.
